Search engine optimization helps search engines discover, crawl, understand, index, rank, and present webpages for relevant searches. It also helps people recognize whether a result deserves their visit. That is close to how Google defines SEO in its own starter guide.

Generative engine optimization focuses on visibility inside systems that synthesize an answer rather than display only a list of webpages. The term was introduced in the research paper GEO: Generative Engine Optimization, which framed visibility in generative responses as a distinct optimization problem.

In practice, a business is not optimizing one universal “AI ranking.” It is improving the conditions under which a platform can discover a source, retrieve the right passage, understand the entity, trust the claim, cite the page, and represent the business accurately. Those stages can differ by platform and even by the wording of the prompt.

Google’s own guidance reinforces the connection rather than the separation. Its guide to generative AI features in Search says established SEO best practices remain relevant because AI Overviews and AI Mode are rooted in core Search ranking and quality systems.

GEO adds questions such as:

  • Can relevant answer and retrieval crawlers reach the content?
  • Can the system identify the business, service, location, people, and evidence correctly?
  • Is the useful answer clear enough to retrieve without stripping away essential context?
  • Do independent sources corroborate the claims the business makes about itself?
  • Which prompts produce a mention, citation, referral, or commercially meaningful outcome?

Four differences that affect the campaign

    Traditional search normally presents a ranked set of results. A generative system composes an answer and may cite several sources—or no visible source at all. GEO therefore evaluates inclusion, treatment, and accuracy as well as the cited position.

    A ranking is commonly associated with a page and query. A generated answer may rely on a particular passage, table, statistic, entity relationship, or third-party reference. The surrounding context still matters, but the retrievable unit can be more granular.

    Generated answers can change across platforms, model versions, locations, prompt wording, and repeated tests. Measurement needs a controlled prompt set, repeated observations, dated evidence, and clear limits—not a screenshot presented as a permanent rank.

    Optimizing the company website is necessary but may not be sufficient. Reviews, profiles, citations, expert references, relevant media, and other independent sources can influence whether the wider information environment supports the same facts.

The false choice

Is GEO replacing SEO? No.

GEO is better understood as a new layer of search strategy. Google’s generative features depend on its Search index and quality systems. ChatGPT search needs public sources it can discover and surface. Perplexity operates crawlers intended to find and link web content in its answers.

Those platforms have different controls. OpenAI advises publishers who want content considered for ChatGPT search summaries and snippets not to block OAI-SearchBot. Perplexity separately documents PerplexityBot for surfacing and linking websites in its search results. Neither control replaces a useful, trustworthy page.

SEO creates and strengthens the source. GEO extends how that source can participate in generated discovery.

What to prioritize

Fix the foundation first—then extend it deliberately

This does not require waiting until conventional SEO is “finished.” SEO is never truly finished. It means sequencing the work so GEO does not become formatting layered over inaccessible pages, weak claims, or unclear business information.

    Map the searches and prompts that precede a useful customer action. Separate discovery, comparison, local, service, and recommendation intent instead of tracking random brand mentions.
